EDINBURGH EDIT: Let Yourself Get Whisky-ed Away

Is there anything more perfectly Scottish than a good dram? There’s no denying that whisky is something we do incredibly well but sometimes the sheer volume of choice can be a wee bit overwhelming. That’s why we’re here to give you the lowdown on 10 of our amazing whiskies, all ready and waiting for your perusal on Drinkly. Come on, let yourself get whisky-ed away. We’re not being dram-atic when we say this is the most important thing you will do today.

WHAT ACTUALLY IS WHISKY?

With the name ‘whisky’ stemming from the Anglicisation of the Gaelic word ‘uisce’ which means water, it’s clear that whisky is part of our very being as Scots, around 60% in fact. Whisky is made from fermented grains which are distilled, aged in casks (which is what determines the age of the whisky as it stops maturing once out of the cask) and is then bottled, ready for consumption. One of the things Scotland is perhaps most known for across the pond and on our very own soil is our whisky industry. So, it seems only right that we imbibe some of that liquid gold.

OUR WHISKIES

Caol Ila 12-Year-Old Whisky

Established in 1846, Caol Ila distillery is based on the beautiful isle of Islay, the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. Named for the Sound of Islay, a narrow strait between the islands of Islay and Jura which the distillery looks out upon, Caol Ila is an award-winning single malt. With the colour of pale straw and inviting fruity aromas complemented by a saltiness that conjures up images of the seaside, Caol Ila offers smooth, sweet smokiness that finishes with a slight sourness left on the palate. This single malt whisky is absolutely ideal for a nightcap: it expertly provides that signature, heart-warming, fiery whisky feel whilst remaining light, aromatic and somewhat floral. The sweet, smoky finish is comforting and soothing, ideal before an 8-10 hour snooze. This whisky may be named for the Sound of Islay, but it’s all about the taste and feel of this one.

Timorous Beastie Highland Blend Malt Whisky

Despite the name, this one packs a punch and is not for the fainthearted. Made from a blend of Highland Single Malts, including Glengoyne, Dalmore and Glen Garioch, this whisky on the nose is dominated by a sweetness which gives way to delicate floral notes, light barley and spiced honey undertones. On the palate, this initial sweetness continues with the sticky taste of raisin, like that of a good sweet sherry such as a Pedro Ximenez, and a hint of sugary vanilla, all perfectly balanced with spiced notes. The finish is subtle and allows a deep oaky flavour to come through.

Glenkinchie 12-Year-Old Whisky

Distilled in Pencaitland, East Lothian, just outside of Edinburgh, Glenkinchie is a beautifully smooth Single Malt. Offering the characteristic lightness and grassy elements Lowland whiskies are known for, Glenkinchie 12-Year-Old is very aromatic with a slight nutty scent combined with sweet honey. To taste, this whisky has a distinct fruitiness with emphasis on stewed fruits, apple peel and again, the deep, sugary, raisin-like element of sherry or dessert wine. With the late flavour of oak, this Single Malt finishes with a hint of barley and the signature pop of freshly mown grass. This award-winning whisky is subtly smoky with a peaty element; it is full-bodied and perfectly smooth.

Aberlour 10-Year-Old Whisky

Named for the small village in Speyside from which it hails, Aberlour whisky is double cask matured in both traditional oak casks and Oloroso Sherry butts. This amber spirit on the nose has soft, fruity notes of red apple, while on the palate there is a distinctive citrusy character balanced with rich, fruity chocolate. This one does linger on the palate, with the finish offering something warm, sweet and spicy. The period of maturation in the sherry casks instils a distinct Christmas cake hint to the Aberlour 10-Year-Old, making it slightly oaky, full-bodied and perfectly sweet and rich. This one remains a firm favourite amongst whisky connoisseurs but the good news that you too can become Aberlover.

Laphroaig 10-Year-Old Whisky

Here’s another whisky coming from beautiful Islay: Laproaig 10-Year-Old Whisky. In making this Single Malt, malt barley is dried over a peat fire and it is this peat, which is only found on Islay, that gives Laphroaig its signature flavour. This one is bold, full-bodied, wonderfully smoky and is lifted by the slight saltiness of seaweed and the sea air of the Islay landscape. Slightly medicinal thanks to the peat, Laphroaig also has a surprising element of sweetness and a nice lingering finish.  Another firm favourite amongst whisky drinkers, you can’t really go wrong with this award-winning golden spirit.

Jura 10-Year-Old Whisky

Produced on the Scottish isle which bears its name, Jura 10-Year-Old is a lovely Single Malt and is a great introductory whisky if you’re looking to get into the spirit. Matured for ten years in American White Oak ex-bourbon barrels with further enhancement from Oloroso Sherry casks, this coppery spirit has notes of nectarine, ginger and the earthy taste of freshly ground coffee. Subtly smoky with aromas of fruit, cracked pepper and dark chocolate, this Single Malt is accessible and delicately smooth. Medium-bodied with warm honey undertones, Jura 10-Year-Old is light and sweet with a smoky sherry finish. If you’ve previously felt overwhelmed by the number of whiskies on the market and are unsure about which one to start on, Jura is the one, we’re sure about that.

Glengoyne 10-Year-Old Whisky

Made in Dumgoyne, Glasgow, this Highland Single Malt is smooth, sweet and gathers a huge depth of flavour that comes from the slowest stills in Scotland. The barley used here is dried by air, with no peat whatsoever, and the spirit is matured in sherry casks made from European and American oak. With sweet notes on the palate of green apple, toffee popcorn, brazil nuts and liquorice, Glengoyne 10-Year-Old is complex and medium-bodied. With warm hints of soft oak and freshly cut grass, this whisky is fresh and nutty without the medicinal tang of peat. This one is smooth, elegant and incredibly moreish.

Glenfiddich 12-Year-Old Whisky

Founded in 1887, this Dufftown-based distillery creates many much-loved whiskies. The Glenfiddich 12-Year-Old is currently the world’s most awarded Single Malt Scotch Whisky and with overtones of fresh pear and subtle oak, it’s easy to see why. Matured in the finest American and European oak sherry casks, this whisky is delightfully creamy with a distinctive fruitiness and a freshness that comes from the exclusive use of the same Highland spring water since 1887. With a long, smooth and mellow finish, the Glenfiddich 12-Year-Old is complex and deep but wonderfully drinkable.

Dalmore 12-Year-Old Whisky

Dalmore 12-Year-Old is the quintessential Highland Single Malt whisky. This one is also matured in American white oak ex-bourbon casks and finessed in aged Oloroso Sherry casks. With pleasingly aromatic scents of citrus fruits, rich chocolate and warm spices, the flavour of this amber spirit is of tart Seville oranges, dried fruits and subtle vanilla. The Dalmore 12-Year-Old finishes with notes of freshly roasted coffee and dark chocolate – surely the most decadent, delicious and Dal-moreish of finishing notes! Richard Paterson, the Master Distiller of Dalmore Distillery, comments that with the complexity and intricacy of his whisky, it has ‘character far beyond its age’. This one is definitely a good-un. The bottle is strangely haunting too if that’s the kind of thing you’re into.

AnCnoc 12-Year-Old Whisky

We’re ending on an interesting one here. The AnCnoc 12-Year Old is made by very traditional methods but the result is an incredibly modern, light and refreshing whisky. This one has something for everyone; the gentle amber liquid holds great complexity whilst remaining light and smooth. On the nose, AnCnoc is very aromatic with the focus on sweet honeyed lemon. The taste of this begins with great sweetness, becomes delightfully fruity and has a long, smooth finish. A must-have in any good whisky collection, with this one you’re really AnCnoc-ing on Heaven’s door – it’s a religious experience.
