For The Love Of Vod: 5 Smirnoff Summer Cocktails

Stellar Smirnoff Recipes for Summertime

Vodka: yet another miracle from the humble potato.

The spirit, which has been around in some form since the Middle Ages, is traditionally made from the liquid of fermented potatoes or grains, with some more modern methods favouring the use of sugars over starch. Hailing from Poland and Russia, vodka is incredibly popular worldwide, with drinks giant Smirnoff at the forefront of the industry. Trading in one-hundred-and-thirty countries across the globe, instantly recognisable by the iconic red label, Smirnoff Vodka is a brand that is routed in British culture. Here at Drinkly, while we offer a huge variety of vodkas (just enter your postcode above to see which ones are available for 1 hour delivery to you), we’re focusing today on Smirnoff and all the fun you can have with it this summer.

When the sun starts to shine and those evenings get longer, there’s really only one thing on the brain: cocktails. There’s something about sitting outside in the garden that simply requires something fruity, sweet and boozy – though, they taste just as good inside if any summer showers should warrant hibernation. Whilst going out for cocktails is always fun, Drinkly gives you the option to enjoy the same thrill from the comfort of your living room. Maybe you feel you’ve had the longest day of the year despite it being past the summer solstice; maybe a takeaway is already on its way but there’s nothing even remotely resembling a drink in the cupboard; maybe you’ve been waiting in all day for a delivery that will only see fit to show up the second you leave the house; maybe you just simply cannot be bothered to move. Does that mean you should miss out on the delicious taste of Smirnoff? Absolut-ely not, pun fully intended and Absolut Vodka is also available from Drinkly, if you should so desire.

With vodka, there are so many different variations of classic, tasty concoctions that you can make. Here are five quick recipes to help transform a bottle of Smirnoff and a selection of mixers, into something magical. Just enter your postcode above to have your very own Smirnoff Summer!

Sex on the Beach

Ingredients (per person):

50ml of Smirnoff Vodka

50ml of Archers Peach Schnapps

1/2 of a glass of Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice

1/2 of a glass of Sunpride Orange Juice

Ice

Lemon garnish

That’s literally all you need for a good Sex on the Beach. You can alter the quantities based on your own personal tastes, too. If you find you like to taste the vodka a little bit more, add less of the juice and a splash more of the vodka and you’re sorted. Equally, if vodka isn’t your favourite, it’s always nice to add a bit of Schweppes lemonade to a Sex on the Beach for a little more sweetness and fizz. We encourage you to go even further; rip up that rule book and go a little bit rogue. If the mere idea of drinking glass after glass of fruit juice is enough to make your dentist weep, why not try combining some sodas together instead to see what results you can achieve? For instance, the San Pellegrino brand offers a wide range of flavours, available for delivery by us, and as long as the flavours you’re experimenting with are roughly orange and berry flavoured, you can call it an experimental Sex on the Beach, a Sexperimental on the Beach, if you will.

For even further personalisation and to get you feeling like a master mixologist, if vodka isn’t really your cup of tea but you find yourself inexplicably drawn to summery cocktails, infusing vodka will change your life. That’s no exaggeration. It’s so easy to do and the results can be amazing. Seeing as the shelf life of fresh fruit seems no more than a nanosecond, if you think you might have any extra lying about, it’s perfect for using to infuse your Smirnoff. Just chop your fruit of choice up, put it in a jar with some vodka, leave it for a couple of days, strain it and then you will have some of the tastiest vodka imaginable. You can use pretty much whatever takes your fancy but if you want a suggestion to start you off, strawberry and/or raspberry infused vodka goes down a treat in this drink. Or, if you can’t be bothered to infuse your own vodka, which, let’s face it, is understandable, Drinkly offer a selection of flavoured vodkas, too.

Woo Woo

Ingredients (per person):

50ml of Smirnoff Vodka

50ml of Archers Peach Schnapps

Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice

Ice

Lime garnish

Categorically proven to make you scream “Woo Woo”, for they would not have called it that otherwise, the Woo Woo is a firm favourite amongst the Smirnoff cocktails connoisseur, but we wonder how many people are aware that it is literally just a Sex on the Beach without the orange juice? If you’re looking to stick to the one spirit, the combination of these two cocktails is a winner. Plus, you can enjoy the orange juice you’re saving here in a hair of the dog Bucks Fizz the following morning. Or, simply make more Sex on the Beach’s, both are good options. We would recommend using lime slices for the garnish on this one, whereas the Sex on the Beach favours the lemon. Using different garnishes and squeezing a bit of the juice into the cocktail itself further helps to distinguish these two cocktails from each other. However, you can really do what you want here – there are no rules when it comes to making cocktails at home. Get creative!

Sea Breeze

Ingredients (per person):

50ml of Smirnoff Vodka

2/3 of a glass of Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice

1/3 of a glass of grapefruit juice

Ice

Lime garnish

This is another cocktail that incorporates many of the same ingredients as Sex on the Beach and the Woo Woo, but this time we’re making it a little bit tangy with the welcome addition of grapefruit juice. If grapefruit juice isn’t something just sitting in your fridge waiting to be used, anything with a sour basis will do. For instance, the San Pellegrino Grapefruit soda would work a treat in this cocktail, or, indeed, the lemon would suit just as well. Input your postcode above to add a few cans to your Smirnoff order!

With the focus on the sharper flavours, the Sea Breeze is the perfect palate cleanser between the rather sweet Sex on the Beach and Woo Woo and you can always squeeze a little bit of lemon or lime juice in there if you’re a fan of all things sour. Even the name Sea Breeze sounds refreshing. It conjures images of British holidays, looking out from the sea front with the revivifying, revitalising wind whipping through your hair, salt water lapping around your ankles, the mouth-watering smell of fish and chips in the air. Now imagine you can get all that from one tart cocktail, from the comfort of your own living room, where you don’t have to deal with seagulls, sun cream or other people. Ideal.

The Moscow Mule

Ingredients (per person):

50ml of Smirnoff Vodka

150ml of Fentimans or Fever-Tree Ginger Beer

Ice

Lime garnish

If you’re looking for a break from the heavily juice-based cocktails, look no further than the Moscow Mule. A Moscow Mule is so simple to make; it’s just ginger beer and vodka, or you can add in some ginger bitters and a squeeze of lime if you’re feeling fancy. With something so simple, and so delicious, why wouldn’t you give it a go? Plus, if you’re making them at home, no one can tell you you’re doing it wrong by not drinking it out of a traditional copper cup. Do make sure you use plenty of ice though; this one is best served ice cold, as are all cocktails on a warm summer evening.

The Godmother

Ingredients (per person):

50ml of Smirnoff Vodka

25ml of Disaronno Amaretto

Coca-Cola (optional)

Ice

The Godmother is a very good option for those who don’t love a fruit-juice-based cocktail. Either sip on the vodka and amaretto straight with plenty of ice or fill the glass with Coca-Cola for a longer, more refreshing drink. This drink feels very sophisticated without being super complicated; you’re only mixing together a maximum of three ingredients. You can impress your pals by telling them that there’s more to it, we won’t tell. Do, also, make sure, especially if you’re drinking it sans Coke, to swill the drink around a bit and look thoughtful in front of a large fire while sitting in an overly large leather chair, as they would do in the movies. It really is the only acceptable way to drink the Godmother, give her the respect she deserves.

Bonus: The Godfather

Ingredients (per person):

50ml of Jack Daniels

25ml of Disaronno Amaretto

Coca-Cola (optional)

Ice

We’ll quickly breeze over that assumption that women drink vodka and men drink whisky… The Godfather really is a great drink and a fantastic way to get creative with a bottle of Jack Daniels, also available from your friends at Drinkly. However, it is completely devoid of vodka so if that’s your spirit of choice, stick to the aforementioned Godmother, she won’t let you down.

So, there you have it! Five (or six if you count that cheeky bonus) great cocktails to whip up this summer. These quick and easy vodka cocktail recipes are just a taster, have a browse of our mixers range and see what you can come up with yourself, or go all out and experiment by adding in a couple more spirits too. The combinations are endless and there’s a whole summer ahead for mixing it up. Finally, if you take only one thing away from this article, for the love of Vod, try infusing your own vodka, you can thank us for the best summer of your life later.
